The band was born at the end of 2001 after Jordi Matas and Jorge Rossy met and held long duo sessions.
With drummer Oscar Domènech and Pere Loewe on bass, the band starts with the quartet formation. After half a year playing all along Catalunya, Martí Serra joins in completing the present formation.
In 2003 and after marathon recording sessions, they record their first album, All That Matas, with Fresh Sound New Talent label. The record presents a work achieved after a two years period of research for a band's own sound. Interaction, melodic cohesion and harmony will be the ultimate distinctive traces of the band.
In summer 2003 the music for a new album starts gestating. Some months later the band gets back to the studio where they will spend long periods recording and perfectioning the second album of the quintet, Racons.
After four months playing every wednesday in the mythical café teatre el llantiol (bcn) the band has aquired a powerful live mixed with a great freedom in the compositions.
Therefore, we can refer to Jordi Matas Quintet as one of the most outstanding bands in the present jazz scene, not only for the quality of its components, but also for Jordi Matas composing job.
